Great SQL Server Express tool

I was trying to build a site for someone over the weekend and I ran into a dilemma.  The site I was using built itself against a .mdf file (SQL Server Express Database file), which cannot be published to remote hosting sites as per its own restrictions.  So, I wanted to go ahead and migrate the whole database to a full fledged copy of 2005 Sql Server.  Unfortunately Visual Studio 2005 doesn’t come with this as a standard feature, BUT you can get it from MS for free and install it as an add-on.

The database publishing wizard basically lets you do a dump of the database into a .SQL file, which then can be run against other database to import the data and structure.  This just saved me hours of re-work, so if you ever need to export data from a .mdf file… I highly recommend this tool.

There is a tutorial here:  http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2006/12/22/recipe-deploying-a-sql-database-to-a-remote-hosting-environment-part-1.aspx
